15 Weeks Pregnant: 3 Things to Expect

Eyes and ear, wiggles and kicks, oh my! Your baby is so busy in there. Check out three things to expect from your baby and your body during the fifteenth week of pregnancy.

  1. The Eyes and the Ears
  2. an illustration of a fetus in a woman's womb

Weighing in at about 2.5 ounces and measuring 4 inches in length, your wee babe is the size of a navel orange. The news this week is that the eyes and ears are claiming their proper spots on the noggin': your little's ears are now positioned on the sides of the head (they used to be in the neck), and his or her eyes are moving from the sides of the head to the front of the face.

  3. Practice Makes Perfect
  4. a 15 week old fetus

You can't feel it yet (but soon you will!): that baby of yours is squirming up a storm. Boasting legs that are now longer than the arms, your little one is practicing kicking, wiggling those fingers and toes, and waving hello. Baby is working on other skills too, namely breathing, sucking, and swallowing, to get ready for life on the outside.

  5. Gross Gums
  6. a close up of a women's teeth and gums

You're probably feeling pretty good these days, except perhaps when you go to brush your teeth. Pregnancy hormones can wreak havoc on your gums (it's true! Those hormones seem to leave no body part unaffected.), leading to soreness, inflammation, and bleeding. It's very important to take care of your teeth and gums during pregnancy, because the gum disease gingivitis has been linked to preterm labor and also pre-eclampsia, which is pregnancy-induced high blood pressure that can cause complications in your pregnancy and labor. So no skipping those dental check-ups—in fact, you should make sure you get in a visit to your dentist before baby arrives!
