Congratulations! Becoming a grandparent is an exciting time in your life. It doesn't matter whether it's your first grandchild or your fifth - seeing that little bundle of joy for the first time is a priceless experience.
Of course, the grandparent adventure doesn't begin when the baby arrives - it begins when your child or your child's partner announces she's expecting. Feel free to lend a helping hand throughout the whole pregnancy, whether she needs someone to accompany her to doctor's appointments, a second set of hands when baby-proofing the house or someone to plan the baby shower.
Being a grandparent will make you want to spend endless hours with your grandkids. Chances are, you'll have plenty of opportunities to do so!
New mothers and fathers need a helping hand every once in awhile, and there's no better resource to turn to than their own parents. All you have to do when they feel the stress of parenthood is reassure them that you know how they feel, and you're there to help out.
At the same time, it's important to let your adult children to be in control of their own children's upbringing. While you just want to be helpful, be aware of how your child is reacting to your help - don't overwhelm the new parents. This is a crazy time in their life - surely you remember the way it was for you!
And, don't forget about the other grandparents in your grandkid's life; They'll want to spend time with the baby, too!
