My favorite approach to photographing kids—including my own, is to capture them exactly as they are. If I know I'm going to be taking photos, I'll pay attention to what I dress my kids in for photos and place them in a good location with good light, but I find the best and most meaningful photos are the ones I never could have planned or predicted. Capturing milestone moments, smiles and eye contact is of course important, but one of the things that gives me the greatest pleasure is capturing children, my own in particular, just as they are.
Yesterday was Jack's second birthday and I happened to capture a series of photos that illustrates this point and the approach to photographing your kids that I recommend perfectly.
