Week by Week Pregnancy Guide

Your pregnancy is coming to a close. Learn what you might experience when you're 38 weeks pregnant.

Your Body at 38 Weeks Pregnant

When you're pregnant at 38 weeks, every single pain and twinge can seem like the start of labor. It's common to feel impatient, but remember that the baby will arrive when he's ready! You may notice more vaginal discharge than normal and may even lose a jelly-like plug. This is called the mucus plug or the show. The plug helps seal the cervix and it's normal to lose it toward the end of your pregnancy.

It's also not uncommon to have a little diarrhea when you're pregnant at 38 weeks. If it lasts more than a day, talk to your doctor.

Many women also find that they feel weak from low blood sugar. This is because your baby at 38 weeks pregnant is taking glucose from your bloodstream. If you're not feeling well, make sure to keep your blood sugar up by keeping a stash of healthy snacks nearby.

Your Baby at 38 Weeks Pregnant

Although your baby is running out of room inside your belly, you should still feel regular movements. If you don't notice movement, call your healthcare provider.

When you're pregnant at 38 weeks, your baby's features are fully formed and she has lost the fine downy hair that previously covered her body. Additionally, the protective white material -- called vernix -- has disappeared.

What to Consider When You're 38 Weeks Pregnant

The end of your pregnancy may leave you feeling exhausted and anxious. If you're feeling tired or run down, listen to your body. Get lots of rest -- you won't be sleeping much when your baby arrives!

If your birthing partner works out of town or far away, it's a good idea to have someone who can step in as a standby birthing partner if necessary -- just make sure they understand the type of birth that you want so they can advocate for you if it's needed. It's also a good idea to leave your emergency contact information in an easily accessible place so you can reach out for help if you need it.
