Woman Gives Birth to 13-Pound Baby - Naturally!

Posted by Leah Mann

The average baby is born weighing around 7 pounds, but a mother in Des Moines, Iowa, smashed that statistic last week when she gave birth to son Asher, who topped the scales at 13 pounds, 12 ounces. The labor took just 6 hours and – get this – mom Kendall had a completely natural birth. No painkillers and no surgery. I... I can’t even.

Asher was 9 days overdue and is the second child for Kendall and her husband Joshua Stewardson, whose first son, Judah, was a whopping 12 pounds himself. When this second baby appeared to be smaller than his brother according to ultrasound measurements, the parents went ahead with their birth plan, forgoing both painkillers and a Caesarian delivery, which some doctors recommend for larger babies to avoid trauma and complications for both the mother and child. In this case, both Kendall and Asher are healthy and happy.

Here’s the story as reported by the local news:

To put it all in perspective, the average baby weighs between 6 and 8 pounds, and only 1 out of every 1,000 infants is born weighing over 11 pounds. The Guinness World Record for the largest baby is 23 pounds, 12 ounces, a girl born in 1879 to Canadian mother Anna Bates, who was herself over 7 feet tall.

Most women don’t know how big their newborns are going to be, although, as in this case, previous pregnancies can be a bit of a warning.

If you thought you were going to have an exceptionally large baby, would you be brave enough to do it au naturale?
