Stuff Every Mom Should Know: Baby Photo Tips

Posted by Mom365 Special

It’s our third day of excerpts from the new book “Stuff Every Mom Should Know” by Heather Gibbs Flett and Whitney Moss. (See Days 1 and 2.) Read on for Flett’s and Moss’s awesome baby photo tips - we love the mini-studio idea - and a third chance to win a copy of their book.

From “Stuff Every Mom Should Know”:

How to Photograph Your Child

The key to capturing your child’s age and stage is not necessarily a head-on snapshot with a full smile. Here are five tips that will bring personality, beauty, and visual diversity to your photo albums.

1. Light it right.  Natural light produces the best-quality photos, so try to avoid using a flash. Look for a shade-free window if indoors or a casual scene outdoors. Kids playing on a grassy field on an overcast day is perfect.

2. Make a mini studio. Clear furniture out of the way to make a set for your photo shoot. Arrange one or two props, like a brightly colored chair or a ride-on toy, if your child needs to be contained.

3. Style your model. You’d be surprised how distracting a Thomas the Tank Engine top or a Dora-emblazoned dress can be. Opt instead for plain, design-free clothing, like a white snapsuit, jeans and a solid-color T-shirt, or a floral sundress. The simplicity of the wardrobe will focus attention on your child’s adorable mug, rather than those of the cartoons.

4. Try different angles. Newborns can be photographed from above. Place a solid color blanket on your bed and stand over

your baby, looking down. Get on your belly to capture your child crawling or playing with toys on the floor.

5. Focus closer. Try cropping in on one detail: just the toes of a baby, or just the galoshes of a preschooler.
