If you have a baby on the way, you might be doing everything you can to prepare, from painting the nursery to baby proofing all your outlets. When it comes to picking a name for your son or daughter, it's good to start early in the pregnancy. That way, you can give yourself time to think it over and see what feels right. Who knows, you could change your mind when the day finally comes.

There are plenty of people you can name your little one after. For some parents, they choose a family member, friend or public figure. Sports are a large part of Western culture, and over time, athletes from all over the world have become well-respected for their accomplishments. If you want to name your baby after someone who millions of people look up to, athlete names are a great choice. Here are a couple ideas for athlete-inspired baby names:

Find your team

If you consider yourself a sports fan, then the first place to look for name ideas is your favorite team. Are you a fan of the Green Bay Packers? You could choose a current player's name like Clay, Aaron or Jordy for boys. If you're having a girl, feel free to tweak the spelling a bit into Erin or Jordan. But don't limit yourself to current players. Look back into some of the greats, like the amazing quarterback Brett Favre or defensive end Reggie White.

If you're feeling extremely dedicated, paint your newborn's nursery the colors of the team your baby's namesake plays for. That way, once your son or daughter grows up, he or she will know who inspired his or her name. That, and you'll be passing down the tradition of rooting for a team to another generation.

Choose a role model

There are many athletes in the world who are doing more than just entertaining. Some are incredible philanthropists and inspirations to people everywhere. Take Serena Williams, for instance. Over the years, she's proved herself as an incredible woman with dedication and drive, becoming one of the best tennis players in the world. In addition, she devotes her time to charities, including acting as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

There are also other athletes who have overcome enormous obstacles, like professional snowboarder Amy Purdy. After contracting a serious case of meningitis, she lost both of her legs and her chances of survival were under 2 percent. Not only did Amy survive, but she thrived, learning to walk again and even snowboard professionally. In 2014, she received a gold medal at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, inspiring people everywhere to follow their dreams regardless of what life throws at them.

Pick popular names

When there is a sports team or player whose name is constantly being announced on television, in newspapers and on the Internet, people are going to notice. If you're looking for a current or trendy name for your little bundle of joy, look to sports news to find one. For instance, if a team just won the World Series or Stanley Cup, you can look at the team roster for a name you enjoy.

The name you choose for your baby doesn't need to have an extensive meaning behind it. But if there is an athlete who you respect and admire, naming your baby after him or her is a great idea. That way, when your child grows older, you can explain where his or her name comes from, and this person can serve as inspiration in his or her life, too.
