A Mini Haunted House

What’s the idea?

Just because she’s too young to go trick-or-treating doesn’t mean your baby can’t take part in Halloween fun. Make a mini haunted house out of a cardboard box for her to crawl or sit in.

What will I need?

•A large, rectangular cardboard box. (If you don’t have one, ask a local office supply store or shipping company, like UPS or FedEx.)
• Old Halloween costumes or decorations
• 3-4 feet of ribbon or string

How do I make it?

1.    Tape the box closed on one of the two smaller ends (this will be the floor of the house) and leave it open on the other. Cut off the two short flaps on the open end of the box. Set the flaps aside for now – you’ll make the roof with them later.
2.    Stand the box upright so it’s tall; the two long flaps will be doors. You can also cut windows into the sides of the box – just cut them fairly low to the ground so your baby can open them while she sits inside.
3.    Attach several lightweight, baby-friendly decorations (a trick-or-treat bag, plastic or foam pumpkins, a fuzzy black bat or a glittery mask, for instance) to pieces of string or ribbon. Make sure none of the objects are small enough to pose a choking hazard.
4.    Poke one hole for each string up through the ceiling of the house. Push the unattached end of each string through each hole and knot it a few times to secure it. Make sure that the decorations will dangle just within your child’s reach so there's no risk that your child could become entangled in the string. If your child is able to stand, cut the ribbon shorter, so it doesn’t pose a choking hazard.
5.    Take the short flaps you cut from the box, lay them side-by-side lengthwise, and tape them together. Then tape the segments on top of the box to create a roof. Decorate the roof and walls with paper ghosts and bats or store-bought cobwebs.
6.    Nestle the house in a corner or between some furniture so it won’t tip over. Let your child open the doors and grasp at the Halloween curiosities inside!
