How Your Baby Grows - The First 6 Weeks

In just six weeks, a baby develops from a helpless bundle of newborn reflexes into a fully aware infant scientist. Every tiny development is a stepping stone to another, bigger one, and each time your infant discovers something about his body or the world, that discovery opens the door for the next lesson. Here's what your baby will be doing and learning in the weeks to come.

Your baby at 1 week

Your 1-week-old has plenty to absorb about this new world, but she’s already had a lot of experience. She knows your smell - put a piece of clothing that has your scent on it in her crib or bassinette, and you'll see that it comforts her. Your baby finds the sound of your voice soothing too - she knows it because she listened to it during your pregnancy. Sounds in the womb were muffled though, so a loud noise now will startle her the first time she hears it, but by the second or third time, she'll be able to tune it out. She’ll also shut her eyes tight after seeing a bright light - it was dark in her uterine environment - but now that she's out in the world, her vision will develop quickly. Your baby can already (sometimes) follow an object with her eyes if it’s moving slowly enough. Try it next time she's alert after a nap: Take a simple object like a ball and move it slowly past her eyes at a distance of about 12 inches - that's about how far a baby this age can focus.
