Is Your Preschooler Brave Enough for this Movie?
Posted by Morgan Benzian
Pixar just relased its latest Princess-themed movie, appropriately titled, Brave. The story follows a headstrong, independent princess named Merida, who doesn't want to get married (how refreshing!) and embarks on a mission to change her fate. As with many Disney/Pixar movies, there are elements of fantasy and magic, as well as some violence.
I really love that my preschooler is finally at the age where we can enjoy going to movies together and I'll admit it - both of us cried at the end of Tangled. But if we go see Brave, we might be crying for a totally different reason.
Supposedly, Brave is really, really scary.
A friend of mine was invited to a screening and she took her 3-year old along with her. She said her daughter kept turning around in her seat because some of the scenes were too scary. My friend also said a lot of the kids in the audience seemed scared, and some parents even walked out with their kids. And she admitted that while the storyline and animation were incredible, she probably wouldn't have taken her daughter along with her if she had known how frightening the movie actually is.
Now, on the flip side, a friend of mine with a slightly older child (5.5 years old) said her daugther loved it. That she couldn't stop talking about how good the story was. There is a ton of adventure and excitement packed into the movie, and unlike all the other so-called "independent" princesses like Mulan and Pocahontas, Merida doesn't fall in love at the end.
I don't know - my preschooler is 4.5, right in between the two. I'm torn.
Here's the official trailer for Brave
Have any of you seen Brave yet? Do you think it's too scary?

My son is 5.5 and in he kept saying "Mommy lets go home I don't want to watch it anymore" He watches most of the super heroes movies but he couldn't handle this one.
