Would You Pay to Choose Your Baby’s Sex?

Gender Selection Turning into Big Business

Many of us register for baby gifts because we don’t want to get stuck with stuff we can’t use.  Well, more and more couples are taking it a step further by essentially "registering" for the sex of their babies.

Couples are shelling out big bucks, to the tune of $40,000, in a process called gender selection. These days it seems as though girls are at the top of more couples’ wish lists. Doctors estimate 80 percent of families in the U.S. want a baby girl. They don’t know why, but it’s a real switch from some other cultures where boys are the hot commodity.

Since we live in a society where people are willing to pay whatever they have ( and don’t have) to get what they want, it really doesn’t surprise me that gender selection is raking in at least $100 million a year.  But as a mother it sickens me. I know it may sound a bit harsh, but there’s no way to sugarcoat it. Why not let nature take its course? Does it really matter if you have a boy or a girl?

Whatever happened to just wanting a healthy baby? I think that should be the main focus, not trying to order the sex of your baby like you’re at a restaurant. I know so many couples who struggle with infertility and would do anything for any baby they were given. I also know of parents who are forced to watch their babies spend their first days on this earth in a NICU. They would do anything to have a healthy baby regardless of the sex. I just think people need to get their priorities in check.

So, I’m obviously fired up about this, but what about you? Would you pay to choose your baby’s sex?
