Would You Give Up Your iPhone for Another Baby?
Weighing the sacrifices of being a mom
Posted by Kristi Gilbert
My husband and I are content with having two minis. A couple of little versions of the two of us. They made our family complete. Having another baby is not a thought.
Maybe sometimes it's a little tiny thought.
I do think about it but I'll debunk the idea. I had very difficult pregnancies with both my babies. Lots of bed rest, very little freedoms. Both my babies went full-term and I'm VERY grateful. Another birth and we could be pushing it.
Still I wonder about it. I wonder how others manage it. We have two kids on one salary and that a challange. We manage but it's tough. Three kids on one salary? I don't know. Others can and are raising three or more children. I don't think our little comfort zone would exist. I want us to be able to have and do some things while we still can. Call me selfish but it's how I feel.
Being a parent is a sacrifice. A HUGE sacrifice. One that some people can't handle. It requires discipline and a loss of things you enjoy; both time and freedom wise and materialistic. With the economy and price of housing, etc., things are different these days...
Need diapers and formula? There goes your iPhone and data plan.
Need to get clothes and no one has hand-me-downs for that 6-to-12 months range? Goodbye, Mani/pedi and eyebrow waxes.
Need to pay the bill for urgent care when he developed a rash overnight? Better cancel that golf game you had planned.
Maybe these are things you're willing to do. Maybe these aren't things you care about. What about traveling? Finishing your degree? Fixing the bathroom plumbing?
I was more than willing to lose time and things for my precious babies. They mean more to me than any object or plan I had made. But that's me. Part of me feels that as a society, some people can't handle making sacrifices for their children. They say they will but when it really happens, the truth is told.
Do you feel you had to make huge sacrifices in your life for your kids? Did things remain the same for you regarding your plans and purchases?
