Teether Alert: FDA Says Avoid This Common OTC Remedy!

If you’ve got a teething tot, you may have to think twice about how to ease his aching gums.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration now says that benzocaine, a common ocal anesthetic found in OTC oral pain relievers like Orajel, Baby Orajel and Anbesol, should never be used on children without a doctor’s supervision.

According to the FDA, the prolific pain reliever can cause methemoglobinemia, a condition that greatly reduces the amount of oxygen carried through the bloodstream. Children under 2 years old are at the greatest risk, and symptoms - which include discolored skin, lips and nails; shortness of breath; and fatigue, and can occur within minutes to hours after use - are often difficult to spot. 

For teething, the FDA recommends using drug-free remedies instead, such as a chilled teething ring or a simple gum massage.
