Celebrity Baby Name Watch: Has Maxwell Gone to the Girls?

Posted by The Name Lady

The actress — who is best known for her roles in TV's Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and Weeds, as well as movies including Bring It On and Horrible Bosses — welcomed her first child with her husband, talent agent Dar Rollins, on Jan. 19. Maxwell Lue Rollins is the new addition who the couple call their “sweet little girl.”

The boys' names "going girl" trend has been heating up in recent years. We've seen Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane welcome Billie, Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O'Connell choose Charlie, and Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen go with Sam, to name a few. Maxwell is a little more surprising than some of the others, but when you think of its feminine counterparts Maxineand Maxie, as well the nickname Max for girls, it doesn't sound that unusual.

Plus, it didn't seem like Lindsay was hoping for a super girly-girl, flowery, frilly baby name anyway. Soon after the actress found out she was having a girl, she was asked whether she'd be dressing her little one in pink. She answered: "Eh, I don't think so. She'll embrace blue if need be!"

Lindsay might have fallen for Maxwell when she scored her gig on HBO's Weeds, where her character is Maxeen. The show also has another Max, a boy, so it's a popular name on the set. And while Maxwell, a common surname, has never been on the Social Security Administration's popular names list as a female name, for males it has actually been at its most popular over the past two decades. It hasn't cracked the Top-100 list just yet, but it's currently No. 134 and seems to be holding steady.

Other celebrities who've given the name Maxwell in recent years are Lance Armstrong and The Bachelorette's Trista and Ryan Sutter — in both cases for boys. In pop culture, we think of Maxwell Smart from TV's Get Smart, the Beatles song "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and of course the smooth-as-silk sounding R&B singer Maxwell. In the 2009 movie Orphan, there was a little girl named Max.

As for baby Maxwell Rollins' middle name - Lue - it's a different take on the traditional Lou. Soon-to-be exes Heidi Klum and Seal's youngest daughter is Lou Sulola Samuel and Keri Russell just welcomed Willa Lou Deary. As a middle name, Lou (Lue and Lu) - a name that fell of the charts completely in the early 1970s -  seems to be getting more play recently. Plus, Lue paired with Maxwell gives the name a feminine touch.

What are you thoughts on "boy names" for girls? Are there any that you really love? Any that you really dislike? And what do you think of Maxwell Lue? Let's talk about it below.

We waited til our son was ten days old, and got to know him, and then we named him, Aaron Joseph, and we love it and he loves it 27 years later.

You wouldn't believe the weird names and spelling of girls' names especially. I am a high school librarian who writes passes for the library and I've seen just about everything. Whatever name you choose, please don't use a cute or ridiculous spelling. I think it actually embarrasses kids. I'd avoid trends and show a little individuality if I had a daughter. How many Kaitlen, Kaytlin, Caitlin, Katelin, etc. do we need? And Maxwell? Ugh. I wouldn't name my boy that. Maybe my dog. I know a woman named Dale. Nobody knows she's a woman until they meet her. I guess some people might think it's cute to name a girl with a boy's name. Would they name a boy a girl's name? How about Susan or Kathy. Please.

If I hear that a baby is named Jaden (Jayden, Jaydon, Jeyden, Jaedon, Jaedyn, Jaydinne, ) one more time I will place them on the top chosen baby names of all time list, with Michael and John. If it is not the top baby name for boys, it should be! And parents are starting to name their daughters that, too, with feminine variations. I promise to never name my baby Jayden or any variation of the name. :):):)

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and this is mine. This is possibly the worst naming trend that is po***r today. The worst part about it is that most of these names have the word 'son' in them or another word that means son, like 'Mack'. Changing spelling doesn't do anything, but make it more confusing. If people don't stop soon, there'll be no more names left for boys. People already think Ashley is a girl's name.

I love boy names for girls. I just had a baby girl Jan 28th and we named her Ashtyn. Took out the O and replaced with a Y for a more feminine touch. We also like the name Kennedy.

I like it! Any name can grow on you, I think. In fact, reading the headline of this I wasn't so sure, but by the time I got to the end, I was on board. (That didn't take long!) One of my favorite pieces of advice I got when I was pregnant was, "Keep the baby's name a secret until he or she is born. Because when it's just a name, everyone will have an opinion, but when your baby is here, no one can diss the name, because...that's your baby's name." Of course, our little guy didn't even get his name until he was a day old -- that's how indecisive I am! We went with his grandfather's names -- Christopher Francis -- and I couldn't love it more.
