Do Babies Really Know Right From Wrong?
Posted by Debate Mom
How many times have you heard the saying, ”Oh he’s just a baby, he doesn’t know any better.” People say it all the time thinking that our little ones really don’t know what they’re doing is wrong. Or do they? I mean, is there such a thing as a "good baby" or a “bad baby”? We all know some babies are easier to take care of than others, but I don’t think they spit up on you or cry non-stop because they want to be bad. That really is just what babies do.
There’s some chatter heating up the web about whether babies have some kind of moral compass. Researchers are battling it out, each armed with their own studies. We all know all babies are not created equally, but I think it’s silly to think they can rationalize what’s right and what’s wrong when they can’t tell you they have to go to the bathroom.
I think really figuring out what’s right and wrong comes into play when they hit the toddler stage. But, with that said, it’s never too early to try and teach them the difference from good and bad earlier. I just don’t think you can expect them to get it right away. Just like batteries are not included in so many of those little toys, I don’t think our little ones come with a “moral compass” included.
Do you think babies have a moral compass? When do you think they can tell right from wrong?
